Off-the-peg or made-to-measure?

As the cloud matures, enterprises are looking seriously at the practical aspects of its adoption.

The advantages of moving all or part of a data centre and its applications to the cloud are well accepted. Benefits include moving from a capital to an operational expenditure model, for example, and enabling flexibility and rapid scalabilty in the provision of IT resources.

It is now time to move on from the conceptual arguments and to look at the nuts and bolts of the issue.

Fundamentally you need to decide which elements of your IT infrastructure are best managed in the cloud and which are more sensibly maintained on premise. Is your chosen cloud provider able to manage a hybrid cloud/on-premise architecture? And importantly, how do you go about decyphering the ambiguities in many Service Level Agreements (SLAs)? And what does 100% up-time really mean, for example?
