Service-oriented architecture (SOA) offers significant benefits, including greater efficiency and a more flexible approach to IT systems development. But to deliver these benefits, a disciplined approach to IT management and governance is vital at all stages of the development process.

SOA allows firms to move away from building new applications from scratch by re-using code elsewhere – but to do this requires a degree of trust that can only be achieved through common standards and procedures.
