The BlackBerry Z10 smartphone is selling well and supplies are barely meeting demand in some areas, according to its Canadian manufacturer.
Last week's launch of the Z10 and BB10 operating system saw Research in Motion change its name to BlackBerry. If that was done to herald in a new era, things have apparently gone well.
The Z10 has received largely positive reviews from experts and analysts, and according to BlackBerry, it has done better than expected since its release in the UK.
Indeed, speaking at the BlackBerry developers' conference in Amsterdam, Stephen Bates, the firm's UK managing director, said the Z10 was selling out just a few days after launch.
Meanwhile, the second largest mobile operator in BlackBerry's home region of Canada, BCE, said pre-orders for the Z10 have been strong, with more pre-release demand for it than any previous BlackBerry device. The Z10 launched in Canada this week and strong sales would be viewed as a very good omen ahead of its release in the US next month.
However, Computing's own experiences with the BlackBerry Z10 have been less than impressive. While the Z10 is an improvement over earlier handsets, it still feels like a catch-up device compared with the latest offerings from Apple and Samsung, rather than a seriously innovative advance.
The device also has some operational issues, with Computing noticing that battery life is rather poor. Indeed, when left overnight without being touched, the Z10 discharged over 30 per cent of its power. Also, the screen, though bright, produces a comparatively washed-out colour set when compared to other devices.
While Computing has mixed feelings about the Z10, others are more positive. Reaching out for views on the BlackBerry Z10 on Twitter, we found one user tweeting that they "absolutely love it", referring to a "rock solid OS and device".
But there are also those who just don't care what BlackBerry brings to the table. "Ever since I heard that BBC interview with the UK exec for RIM I have no interest in their products," said one Twitter user.
Nonetheless, positive reviews of the Z10 from various sources have helped to lift BlackBerry's value on the Toronto Stock Market, with shares in the firm ending yesterday at C$ 16 (£10.2,) seven per cent higher than at the beginning of trading.
