The Times reveals 100,000 digital subscribers one year after paywall launch

News International, publisher of The Times and The Sunday Times, has revealed that the number of subscribers paying for digital editions is now higher than 100,000.

This news comes a year after News International placed its content behind a paywall and started charging readers for accessing online content.

The number of monthly digital subscribers has increased by 28 per cent since February of this year, it added.

"One year on from launch, we have proved that people are willing to pay for quality journalism in digital formats. Many doubted if our digital strategy would be successful – here is unequivocal proof it is moving in that direction," said Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International.

"We have more committed subscribers than ever before, and they are choosing to access our journalism in whatever format suits them best. The growth rate for take-up on tablets is moving at pace, and we believe this valuable and attractive audience accessing our digital products will continue to grow."

The Times and The Sunday Times iPad apps are available as part of a digital subscription for £2 a week.

When you add in print subscribers to the figures, News Corporation claimed to have 250,000 joint print/digital and digital-only subscribers to The Times and The Sunday Times.
