HP has launched what it claims is the world's most energy efficient data centre. The HP performance optimised data centre (POD), or EcoPOD, has a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of just 1.05, according to the firm.
If accurate, the figure is lower than Facebook's data centre PUE rating of 1.07 and Google's 1.16.
The EcoPOD is just a quarter of the cost of a traditional bricks-and-mortar data centre and HP claims it can be deployed faster than any competitive offering – within just 12 weeks.
The data centre is due to be launched in the US in the fourth quarter of 2011 and rolled out worldwide in early 2012.
The PUE is determined by dividing the amount of power entering a data centre by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it. PUE is expressed as a ratio, with overall efficiency improving as the quotient decreases toward one.
HP unveiled the EcoPOD at its HP Discover annual event in Las Vegas today.
