Norwich City College has been taken to task by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for dumping sensitive personal information relating to around 80 of its students into a campus skip.
The files contained sensitive medical details and were found in unsecured bin bags ready for disposal. To make matters worse, this is the second time the college has disposed of personal information in this manner.
The college reported the breach of the Data Protection Act to the ICO in February 2011.
Despite this being the second such breach by the college, the ICO has decided not to issue a fine, and has instead made the institution's principal, Richard Palmer, sign an undertaking to ensure that a formal policy around the handling of confidential waste will be in place by 1 May 2011.
