British Gas has become the latest UK enterprise to launch an IT apprenticeship scheme.
The company has announced the launch of a two-year information systems (IS) apprenticeship programme.
The IS apprentices will work in one of four different streams: software development, software testing, projects and business engagement and user experience.
The apprenticeship will involve formal training, self-learning and learning on the job from industry experts.
"Over two years you'll gain the knowledge, skills and experience to help you stand out from the crowd now and long into the future," Dave Bickerton, group chief information officer, wrote in the online prospectus.
This is a great opportunity for school leavers to gain important hands-on experience while simultaneously developing their technical knowledge. The continued development of the UK’s IT industry is crucial to its success and this apprenticeship scheme marks a positive step.
Companies in a variety of engineering sectors traditionally offer good apprenticeships, which have allowed many to develop their skills and progress in their career. The recent initiative announced in this year’s budget to create 5,000 apprenticeships also demonstrates the new opportunities available for young people and highlights the value of apprentices to a company’s continued development and return on investment. The Institution of Engineering and Technology is committed in its support for such initiatives and encourages the IT industry to take control in shaping the next generation of its workforce.

Is British Gas joining the growing list of employers who refuse to consider skilled unemployed - but will gladly take inexperienced teenagers?
