IBM Impact 2011: Send in the clouds

IBM Impact 2011 kicked off in Las Vegas this week and the topic of cloud computing has once again dominated discussions.

IBM announced a new software offering intended to help companies build their own cloud computing platforms, where clients will be able to use a web-based interface to install applications, configure databases and set up security.

It claims that the software will allow companies to accelerate cloud deployments, as it comes with built-in monitoring, life cycle management, and resource elasticity.

OneTree Solutions is one of the first companies to use the offering. It has developed a solution called OT ReMax.

OT ReMax aims to provide profitable pricing recommendations to sales agents, customised for each offer and contract, allowing them to make better informed decisions.

"It provides a revenue maximisation solution without requiring its customers to make up-front investments on hardware or software," said Dr Panos Konstantinidis, partner and co-founder of OneTree.

WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 8, a new software application server designed to speed the development of applications and services, was also unveiled by IBM.

IBM says the new version includes increased client security and control, and delivers automated enhancements for the installation, maintenance, testing and problem resolution of business applications.

IBM has also recognised the growing popularity of mobile devices by extending WAS application support to include iPad, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.

"We are seeing sea changes in the way people demand access to their information and applications," said Marie Wieck, general manager, application and integration middleware, IBM.

"We are helping our clients extend key business applications beyond their traditional networks to mobile, social, cloud and other new market opportunities."
