Cambridge-based chip manufacturer CSR is to acquire Silicon Valley-based company Zoran Corporation for about $679m (£420m).
CSR makes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS products and Zoran provides imaging and video technology for digital cameras, home entertainment and printers.
The merger will allow CSR to provide integrated technology that addresses the growing market for connected, location-aware multimedia devices.
"Digital electronic devices are becoming increasingly connected and full of media-rich features, including the ability to stream images from your camera to your PC or video conferencing from your smartphone."
