Unions are angered by the planned scheme which they say will freeze pay unless staff exceed their performance criteria.

Unions have calculated that an IT staff member on a junior project manager grade will be #9,336 worse off over 10 years. This is based on the member of staff meeting performance criteria three years out of four and exceeding them in the fourth year. A quarter of bank staff exceed their performance criteria each year.

A Barclays spokeswoman agreed with the calculation. 'In this case the pensionable salary would be lower than it would have been.' But she pointed out that some staff will be better off under the proposed scheme.

This week's ballot asks Barclays staff to agree to hold a second ballot in support of 'sustained industrial action' in protest over the pay proposals.

The result is due on 27 June.

Barclays has 3,000 IT staff, half of whom are union members.
