The government is looking for suppliers to maintain and develop its main UK border control technology.

The Warnings Index (WI) system is used by front-line immigration staff at 110 sites in the UK, seven in western Europe, and 170 visa-issuing posts around the world. Names, organisations and lost or stolen documents can be checked against the database.

The Immigration & Nationality Directorate (IND), part of the Home Office, is starting the procurement process for an eight-year deal to maintain the existing system.

Hardware and software platforms are to be upgraded over the next two years, and the incoming supplier will be expected to support these systems and provide input on future developments.

The WI system consists of a central hub and network covering 439 immigration fixed controls, 215 back-office systems, 93 search engines, 190 printers, 1,023 portable systems and 50 data distributors.

?There will be potential to upgrade, reconfigure, refresh and expand the system, and to provide a range of support, maintenance and development services for its applications,? says the IND.

The deal is expected to be signed in 2006.
