Transatlantic joint venture AT&T-Unisource is doubling the capacity of its IP backbone between the US and Europe.

The new link, which will double the carrier's existing 155Mbps link between Amsterdam and New York, is being created in response to the recent upturn in internet usage by European businesses, the company said.

"Internet use by businesses has only just started to boom in Europe," said Jos Gerrese, the director of internet transit service at AT&T-Unisource Communications Services.

"This additional capacity ensures we are fully prepared for the anticipated growth."

The AT&T-Unisource backbone network connects users via 200 high-speed Points of Presence in 17 European countries.

From its Amsterdam hub, AT&T-Unisource's transatlantic circuit connects with its European network, which links countries including the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden.
