IT figures awarded in New Year's Honours list

The head of IBM's UK operations has been awarded with a CBE in the New Year's Honours list.

Larry Hirst, country general manager at IBM, has won the accolade for his 'services to the computing industry'.

Professor Andrew Hopper, professor of computer technology at Cambridge
University, has also been given a CBE for his services to the industry.

Dr Martyn Thomas, an independent consultant software engineer, has also been given an CBE for 'services to software engineering'. Stephen Carter, chief executive of Ofcom and David Penney, vice president, BT global business markets, get theirs for services to the communications industry.

Jane Cavanagh, founder and chief executive of SCI Entertainment Group, gets an OBE for 'services to the computer games industry.

Marianne Caffrey, IT systems engineer at the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, gets an MBE 'for services to science'.
