The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is deploying an extensive internal portal to provide better communication channels and access to data for its 4,500 staff.
Based on data and information on the department's Prism intranet, the portal is currently under test before an official pilot involving about 250 staff starts in August. Full deployment is due early next year.

'We didn't want to duplicate any information,' said Ian Adkin, IT programme manager for the DfES. 'We wanted to use the information we already have to drive the portal.'
The DfES is implementing the new portal with the assistance of specialist portal vendor Plumtree. Staff will be able to access real-time departmental and government news, reports, human resources information and departmental databases from a personalised, single point of access.
The portal will also provide links to partners such as OFSTED and the Teacher Training Agency.
The DfES would not say how much it is spending on the new portal.
