BT says the volume of data on its network has increased so much that it now exceeds voice traffic.
BT's UK MD, Bill Cockburn, said there had been a huge increase in the amount of e-mail and e-commerce over the last year.
"Already more data is transmitted over BT's phone network than voice calls.
"More than 10 million e-mails were sent in the UK every day in comparison to 60 million letters," he added.
BT and AT&T are currently building an IP network alongside their existing voice network.
