A Home Office deal with Microsoft should save the criminal justice sector £8.4m in licensing costs over three years.

The contract covers the Home Office and criminal justice agencies such as the Crown Prosecution Service, the prison service and police forces across the country ? some 230,000 licensees.

The deal was agreed using the framework agreement brokered by Whitehall buying agency the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) which makes provision for discounts to bodies with more than 50,000 licences.

'Using Microsoft software means information such as fingerprints or court records can be shared more easily to help bring more offenders to justice,' said a Home Office spokeswoman.
