The MoD has hired an EDS-led consortium to boost security in commercial software for use in government, military and financial services systems.

EDS will work with operating system providers Novell and SCO and security specialists Zergo and Spyrus. The consortium claims it will develop a system offering improved levels of security and interoperability in standard commercial software.

Jim Alyson, an MoD project manager, said: 'This will encourage the introduction and use of leading-edge secure intranet technologies that will satisfy commercial and military needs.'

The system will demonstrate information retrieval and transaction processing in a distributed environment.

The project is the second part of the Security in Open Systems Technology Demonstrator Programme which aims to cut the costs of secure IT systems.

Once the MoD's security criteria are published, the ministry hopes they will be adopted by vendors, leading to a series of standardised products which can be plugged together to create secure intranet technologies cheaply.
