Microsoft is working on a new version of Windows NT for the embedded market, writes Cath Everett.
The offering is intended to be used with or without a hard disk, monitor, mouse or keyboard ? depending on the applications, which can range from storage systems to switches. Microsoft is aiming the cut-down operating system at both corporate and home users.
While NT is already being deployed to a limited extent in the embedded marketplace, Microsoft is trying to make it easier for manufacturers to implement the platform in this lucrative sector.
James Allchin, senior vice president of Microsoft?s personal systems group, said that the cut-down version of NT could be incorporated into switches, routers and remote access servers.
Microsoft is also looking at home automation, Allchin added. NT Embedded (NTE) could run mini-servers that connect, monitor and run household appliances from heating to hoovers.
NT?s new version will be developed under licence by Venturcom in Massachusetts, which will also provide front line sales, support and training for manufacturers.
