Technology will play an increasingly important role in the transport sector next year, according to a report into IT trends for 2007 by supplier Atos Origin.
The survey predicts increasing use of mobile computers for people working on train tracks and on the roads, new ticketing systems to combat fraud, and increased identity and asset management software to reduce internal fraud and sabotage.
And as road congestion increases, more congestion charging schemes and pay-as-you-go taxing will be implemented.
‘Security on the UK’s transport network continues to drive decisions on budget allocation,’ says the report.
Other areas of focus for 2007 include asset management technologies, such as radio frequency identification for asset identification and global positioning systems (GPS) for asset location.
Wireless networks will also continue to be deployed both at transport hubs as well as on buses and trains for use by passengers and for a real-time view of congestion.
