Irregularities have emerged over the way Gateway 2000 administers after-sales support, following the collapse of a Midlands hardware maintenance company.

On 6 October, GTS Computer Services of Dudley went into voluntary liquidation. A number of its contracts were sold. Strata Solutions of Birmingham bought out GTS' contract for providing Gateway 2000 support services and is now looking after GTS's former customers.

This has caused confusion at Gateway headquarters. According to support services manager Lorcan Burke, the only company officially working on behalf of Gateway 2000 is ICL Sorbus.

'We have no arrangements with any other companies,' he said.

'Lots of companies would like to be our support providers, but we only deal through ICL Sorbus.'

Burke regards the matter as serious. 'It's not impossible for other companies to be maintaining our kit, but they have not got our approval.'

Asked what he would do if someone was found misleading Gateway customers, he said: 'We would speak to our counsel and take it from there.'

Patrick Craig, a director of Strata, confirmed that he had been approached by Gateway representatives: 'We'd like to think we'll be able to hang on to the business,' he said.
