Network Rail has started the replacement of a train monitoring system across stations operated by Southeastern and Southern.
The outgoing system, called Driver Only Operator, is in operation on 159 platforms across 66 stations and allows train drivers to check CCTV monitors on the platform to ensure passengers are clear of the doors without the need for a train dispatcher, which improves train times in and out of the station.
Supplier Telent has been awarded a contract to carry out the replacement work, which started in February 2009 and is forecast to complete in June 2010. The project will see the installation and commissioning of 900 CCTV cameras, 1,200 monitors and associated housing and cabling works across 159 station platforms.
A bespoke modelling tool is being used to design the CCTV camera and monitor layouts to meet each station platform's particular requirements.
