Insurance giant Swiss Re will test voice-over-Internet Protocol (IP) in a pilot that could see the largest rollout of this experimental technology to date, writes Gavin Clarke.

Swiss Re will link 8,000 users at more than 70 sites worldwide if the pilot, scheduled for the end of this year, is successful.

While organisations such as drinks manufacturer Pepsi have predicted that they can save a third of their on business costs with voice/IP technology, there have been no large-scale deployments.

Publishing company The Economist Group used voice/IP to link users at two sites in London and New York. Citibank by contrast, has ruled out an implementation because it said the technology would have demanded too much network capacity.

Swiss Re group network service director Bernhard Karrer said voice/IP will ensure that the company?s IT infrastructure is ready for future developments.

Karrer added that Swiss Re?s planned upgrade to ATM will provide it with enough capacity to support integrated voice-over-data.
