Tesco is extending trials of electronic shelf-edge labelling to a second shop following a successful trial of the wireless technology earlier this year (Computing, 13 July).
The supermarket giant has been testing the technology to enable it to instantly update and check delicatessen prices against its competitors.
The electronic displays update any form of rich text content, such as graphics, logos, promotional offers and price changes instantly. The displays are linked wirelessly to in-store systems with a 100-metre range.
Following a successful trial in its Leicester store, Tesco is extending the pilot to its High Wycombe shop, installing 400 displays on the counters area at shop.
The second stage of the trial will collect customer and staff feedback in a more established supermarket to assess the possibility of a nationwide rollout.
The trial has already reduced food wastage by giving staff more time to replenish stock rather than spend time updating traditional paper labels.
‘Staff and customers in the first store have already embraced the technology as part of the delicatessen design, in particular the rich content on each display unit,’ said Mark Green, head of counters, Tesco.
‘The ability of instant price updates, as well as the amount of additional product information that can be displayed have had a major impact on staff productivity and the amount of food being thrown away.’
The displays, which are provided by ZBD, only use power when images are changed, means a low cost of ownership and early return on investment.
