Netscape has fired the first shot in a war with Microsoft to establish a standard for Internet broadcasting.

This week the company released a beta version of its Communicator browser and client software, which can receive broadcasts made using a proprietary standard from Web broadcast specialist Marimba.

Content providers including CNN, ABC, Disney and Conde Nast have already committed to broadcast on the Net using the Marimba format. Other adopters of Marimba's software include IBM and Sybase.

Sam Sethi, Netscape marketing manager, said: 'Next is the push war. By coming to market first and signing up the content providers we'll start the market. Content is king.'

Microsoft will retaliate this summer with a browser supporting the Channel Definition Format (CDF) for Web broadcasting. CDF has been submitted to standards bodies for ratification.
