Microsoft last week launched a new version of its server software to help firms connect to employees and partners via wireless connections.
The new Mobile Information Server 2002 Enterprise Edition, unveiled at the Internet World Wireless East 2002 show in New York, arrives six months after the company's first version of the software.
Microsoft has modified the product to provide greater manageability and security following feedback from customers and partners, including Accenture, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard and IBM Global Services.
The launch of the updated server software follows Microsoft's recent launch of new software for wireless handhelds. The Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition extends Microsoft's handheld computing platform with integrated wireless voice and data capabilities for smartphones.
Microsoft is therefore making a two-pronged push into wireless hardware - with Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition for handsets, and the new server software for corporates.
Mobile Information Server 2002 Enterprise Edition includes over-the-air synchronisation to Microsoft Exchange from Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone devices; Enterprise Setup and Personal Setup Tool, which simplify management of multiple mobile users; and extra security topologies, protocol support and authentication.
Compaq and HP - both Pocket PC hardware manufacturers - said they are introducing new service offerings using Mobile Information Server.
