Toshiba Information Systems has announced that it is to sponsor Finnish rally legend Ari Vatanen in his assault on the 1997 Network Q RAC Rally. The forty-five year old former World Rally champion will contest the gruelling 1843km event in a Toshiba/R-E-D Racing Ford Escort world rally car and is tipped for a top five finish.
The move has been taken in a bid to expand the marketing of Toshiba's new range of Equium PCs and it will be the Equium brand identity that will be emblazoned on the car. Toshiba has also pledged to supply two Satellite-Pro notebook PCs with special software to Rally Engineering Development (R-E-D), who are preparing and running the car.
PC Division director Alan Thompson sees the rally car sponsorship as an opportunity to "showcase the durability of our products in a harsh and testing environment."
