Channel Five has installed a fleet of Canon MFPs

Channel Five is expecting to save around £125,000 in servicing costs over five years by installing Canon’s new imageRunner Advance multi-function printers (MFPs) at its headquarters in central London.

Canon has fitted print and imaging equipment into its five-storey building which houses most of the channel’s 290-strong workforce.

The MFPs will help make print and document management more effective. Five expects to cut costs by £25,000 in the first year as a result of the installation.

They will be used to print production schedules, scripts, financial reports and marketing materials.

Five said that environment and energy savings were a key consideration when making decisions about the office refurbishment.

The broadcaster has managed to control printing and cut waste within the organisation by consolidating the printer fleet to just two per floor, instead of multiple desktop devices. It also provides access cards for staff to release printing at the device.

The set-up also gives Five’s IT department complete visibility over who is printing what, as a result of Canon’s uniFlow Output Manager software. This means ongoing reviews and process improvements can be implemented as required.

UniFlow provides detailed reporting, which ensures that Five can make the most effective use of its print fleet by strategically placing devices in areas where they are most needed.

Five also said that its decision to work with Canon was influenced by its competitive pricing and the financial flexibility offered through a leasing agreement.

“Despite the fact that our media is mostly broadcast, we still rely heavily on print across the organisation,” said Hanan George, assistant facilities manager at Five. “Initially we worked with Canon to do a print audit, which allowed us to see where and how savings could be made and processes improved. The cost and environmental benefits this brings to us are really important.”
