BT-AT&T

NTT

(Nippon Telephone and Telegraph)

Emerging by a short head. With the largest revenues of any telco, Japan's national carrier has been in talks with BT and is known to be looking to expand internationally as it starts to face competition at home.

RBOC

(Regional Bell Operating Companies)

Currently involved in US merger activities, but thought to be looking for an international presence and able to raise the cash.

UNISOURCE

The withdrawal of AT&T has left the company without a key partner. It is recalculating its strategies and considered unlikely to be a contender.

CABLE AND WIRELESS

Has presence beyond UK that could be expanded, but is currently heavily occupied at home.
