University uses IP for security

The University of Central England (UCE) is using an IP-based CCTV system to fight crime at its Birmingham campuses.

Spread across the whole of the city, the university has taken on the system in its bid to create a single unified security policy.

The system is currently deployed at 12 of UCE's Birmingham campuses, and a survey of students in those areas has already reported a reduction in criminal activity.

Andrew Markou, security manager at UCE Birmingham says it needed the system because it has campuses in many areas, including highly dense inner city urban zones.

'This poses a great challenge to security. Previously security issues were dealt with locally and we were unable to put in place a common strategy or policies for ensuring a secure student environment,' he said.

'The CCTV services from ntl:Telewest Business was the most cost effective in order to introduce a central policy. They also provide unparalleled local support and the flexibility for us to add further sites as the university grows.'
