Sun Microsystems is set to announce a new NC ? known as Krupps ? to take advantage of developments in the Java operating system and tools.

One of the main features of the new models is that they are convection cooled.

The manufacturer claims that this will mean lower maintenance bills.

The new models will be used for production systems, rather than just pilot and development projects.

There will be two main configurations. The higher end Java Station will cost less than #800 and will be built on a larger tower design. A #600 slim tower version will be similar to existing models but will also run the latest Java software.

The models are based on a 100MHz Microsparc II processor, supporting 64Mb of memory and 10/100Mbps Ethernet.

For the first time they will include flash memory to enable boot sequences to complete faster. Applications can also be stored in Java Stations with larger amounts of flash.

Sun has hinted that the improvements are designed to make these Java Stations run significantly faster than current models.
