Police forces in Scotland are introducing a new IT system to share up-to-date information on criminals.

The Scottish Intelligence Database (SID) will provide officers in eight forces and the Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency with a single source of data. Roll out started in August and will be completed by November.

Intelligence was shared between regional forces before, but not on this scale, says SID project manager, detective superintendent Ian McCandlish.

'Serious and organised crime respects neither local nor national nor international boundaries between police forces,' he said.

'SID will allow officers access to data from the Shetlands to Gretna Green. Criminals may travel the length and breadth of Scotland but if we hold intelligence on them it will be available to front-line officers irrespective of where they are,' said McCandlish.

The application and database are based in Glasgow, replicated for disaster recovery and guaranteed 24/7 service, and forces connect using the existing Criminal Justice Extranet infrastructure.

'SID is professionalising the environment and will help standardise intelligence working practice throughout Scottish police forces,' said McCandlish.

The system was developed in partnership with supplier ABM UK.
