Compaq will this year introduce a pilot service which enables customers to buy PCs over the Internet.

The facility will be an extension of the company's Compaq Direct catalogue operation and at first will be available only in the US. Such services are also being considered by other PC vendors, including, reportedly, IBM.

Compaq Direct was launched to the US market 18 months ago and has accumulated almost $10bn (#5.9bn) worth of business in that period.

Compaq has also recently created a financing company which offers financial and leasing options to customers. It will operate in the US and is called Compaq Capital Corporation.

Financing for UK customers is offered by Dana Commercial Credit, to which Compaq has outsourced its financing activities.
