Ucas has completed its first year using an electronic matching system placing students with higher education institutions based on their exam results.

Around 2.7 million A-Level, AS-Level and other examinations results were matched successfully with students and their chosen university courses.

Previous Ucas database systems were outdated and needed to interface with a wide variety of disparate legacy applications. The new database was provided by LogicaCMG.

With the increasing number of online transactions by applicants, schools and universities, the system needed upgrading as failures would have affected hundreds of thousands of students, leaving them with a long wait to find out their status with the universities and colleges.

‘With more results to process than ever before and so much depending on the successful matching of applicant records, it was vital that this operation was error free and ran to schedule,’ said Paul Featonby, Ucas director of digital services.
