The impending rollout of smart meter technology has led to the creation of 2,600 new jobs at British Gas.
The energy supplier will recruit the staff by 2012 to support installation of the devices and to help customers understand how to use them.
The government wants all homes in the UK to be fitted with smart meters by 2020.
The devices allow residents to more closely monitor their energy use, and can even identify which appliances in their home are using the most electricity. The meters transmit usage details back to suppliers, removing the need for energy firms to make a visit to check consumption.
