The DVLA is bringing the production of driving licences back in-house to improve efficiency and cut costs.
All external document creation for photo-card licences and accompanying paperwork is set to be replaced by mid-2007.
Bill Skedgell, IT development manager at the DVLA, says the move will speed up response to applications.
‘We can improve turnaround times and extend the cut-off time for receiving information, getting licences out to the customers the next day,’ said Skedgell.
‘Having the driving licence document creation as part of our integrated systems will bring big savings because when it is outsourced every task is costed and there are overheads to every request.
‘Bureaucracy and testing times are condensed because we’re developing systems in-house, and the delays and complications that go with that are also reduced.’
This is the latest phase of an initiative to migrate all document creation in-house.
