Greater trust in the net boosts online sales

Increasing trust in the internet has led to an 87 per cent rise in ecommerce sales.

Figures from Visa show that UK online sales topped £1.5bn in the third quarter of this year, a significant increase compared to the same period in 2002.

The airline and entertainment sectors experienced the largest sales, and services such as online bill payments and financial management are gaining ground.

'More people are entering their "web comfort zone" where they are broadening the types of products and services they buy online,' said Hugo Bottellier, vice president of Visa EU.

Ashim Pal, vice president at analyst Meta Group, says increased levels of trust in the internet are a big factor.

'We're not seeing so many stories about credit cards being ripped off, and that's increasing confidence,' he said.
