A new league table of Europe's top dotcom companies has put the UK ahead of continental rivals, hogging two thirds of the list.

The table, drawn up by ecommerce consultancy The Bathwick Group with the Sunday Times, is based on private companies that use the internet as an integral part of their business. It excludes infrastructure or service companies and investment vehicles, quoted firms and those with US parents.

Instead, the list aims to identify potential stars of the e-economy - companies with strong management teams which are ripe for flotation.

Top of the list is sports website sportal.com, in which investment fund Jellyworks has taken a £2.5m stake. British startups take five of the other top 10 places, with music portal Peoplesound and loyalty scheme Beenz among the front runners.

As impressive is the fact that UK dotcoms command 67 of the top 100 places, with UK travel, recruitment and shopping websites held to be more viable than their continental counterparts.
