Gemplus has launched a smart-card-based security solution, which avoids processing the pin-code on the PC. The GCR420 achieves this by connecting directly to the keyboard port. The pin-code is then sent directly to the reader for authentication, avoiding any possible security weaknesses.

Gemplus is aiming the card at e-commerce, home banking, PC access control and internet markets. It is compatible with all major OSs, and is based on the Gemplus GemCore hardware and firmware technology. It will also operate with smart cards complying with the ISO 7816 standard.

The GCR420 is available from Gemplus at #20 per reader.

Gemplus: (01705) 486444.
