VLSI Technology plans a move to manufacturing chips using lines of circuitry just 0.20 micron wide. The new chips, which are expected to be ready late this year, will require a boost to the company's current manufacturing process, which is capable of making circuits 0.35 micron wide. VLSI also beats its most advanced competitors which have just started to manufacture circuits that are 0.25 micron wide. The new capability will produce much more advanced chips for computer workstations, mobile phones and satellite TV decoders.
