The rollout of chip-and-PIN in the UK is on track, with nearly 50 million cards having been issued to over 25 million people - well over half of the 42 million cardholders in the UK, according to new figures from the Chip-and-PIN Programme.
Tesco, Homebase and other big UK retailers have already implemented chip-and-PIN in about 396,000 checkouts.

The report says that 94 per cent of consumers are aware of the technology and three in five chip-and-PIN cardholders expect to use their PIN code on their next transaction.
'We have now reached a turning point in the chip and PIN rollout,' said chip-and-PIN spokeswoman Sandra Quinn.
'Everyday more shops are switching on and cards are being issued so the number of people who may well be asked for a PIN perhaps for the very first time is higher than ever,' she said.
The Chip-and-PIN Programme is launching a television advertising campaign to educate consumers about the switch to the new system and its benefits.
