Video conferencing specialist Avistar today announced enhanced integration between its AvistarVOS video suite and both IBM's Lotus Sametime 7.5 collaboration suite and Microsoft Office.

The company said the new integration allow users of Sametime 7.5 to identify contacts using the suite and communicate with them through Avistar's video capabilities.

"It means that if you are IM-ing someone in Sametime and realise you need to escalate the conversation and find out more by talking to them, you can just click to initiate an Avistar call," explained John Carlson, vice president of marketing at Avistar.

Similar integration with Microsoft Office has also been added, according to Carlson, allowing users of Exchange, for example, to initiate video calls using their address book or contact names in an email. He added that other office applications, such as PowerPoint and Excel, can also be used within video calls so that other participants can see the presentations or spreadsheets a user is discussing.

The enhanced integration comes a day after Avistar unveiled the latest version of its suite featuring new automated bandwidth optimisiation capabilities designed to make it easier for mobile workers to undertake reliable video calls.
