The Northern Ireland Civil Service's (NICS) has signed a £50m 12-year deal with BT to support its Accounting Services Programme (ASP).
Under the terms of the contract BT will help the NICS develop a common accounting IT system and a single transaction handling centre to handle to improve its financial management.
Northern Ireland finance minister David Hanson says NICS accounting systems will be completely transformed by the ASP.
'It will rationalise business processes and harnessing the latest technology to provide high quality services and bring about a step change in the quality and efficiency of public services,' he said.
The transaction handling centre is set to go live by the end of 2008, and will be staffed by up to 200 NI civil servants, with changes to financial system beginning in mid-2007.
