NHS Shared Services no longer mandatory

The NHS Shared Services initiative, originally expected to save £180m by centralising financial processes, is to become voluntary. Current pilots in Leeds and Bristol were to be rolled out nationally following an evaluation by the Department of Health. But the government now says joining the scheme will be at the discretion of individual NHS trusts.

NHS Shared Services chief executive Philip Hewitson: 'We are no longer going to be able to realise the savings originally envisaged for the scheme because the plan for roll-out is under review. But we are committed to delivering as much of the benefit as we can.'
