A public-private partnership to develop IT infrastructure in UK schools was launched on Monday 12 January in London, Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff.
Dubbed UK NetYear, the initiative serves as a first step towards the government's vision of a National Grid for Learning and provides information and advice about Web connection or intranet set-up.
Monday's launch linked 18 UK schools with a live webcast. Schoolchildren in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland had the chance to interview celebrities in a chatroom at the UK NetYear website, www.uknetyear.org.
UK NetYear faces a substantial challenge in wiring all UK schools to the Internet. Of 32,000 schools throughout the UK, at present only 6,000 are connected to the Internet.
