Smaller companies will help increase global IT spending by up to four per cent in 2005, according to Meta Group.
The analyst's Worldwide Benchmark Database research found that blue-chip companies expect to increase IT spending by just one per cent this year, while smaller firms - those with a turnover of less than £50m - intend to boost technology investment by 23 per cent.
'It comes as no surprise that technology spending increases are being driven by small businesses,' said Peter Scargill, IT chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses.
'For smaller firms, ecommerce represents more customers, more suppliers and the infinite possibilities of a virtual identity.'
The Meta Group research includes information from more than 20,000 companies worldwide.
