Sun Microsystems is retreating under assault from Microsoft and Intel. At least, that's our interpretation of comments Sun chief executive Scott McNealy made at last week's Netscape developers' conference, writes Tim Stammers.
McNealy said Sun will step up sales of the Intel version of its Solaris operating system. It will also make Solaris appear more like Windows NT - and make NT a target platform for server-based software used to run NCs.
According to McNealy, NT and Solaris are already converging as Microsoft develops the scalability of NT, and Solaris catches up with NT features.
Sun will accelerate the process by emulating as many NT interfaces as possible. 'We're going to put the brake pedal in the same place they do,' McNealy said.
NT will also be a platform for what McNealy called 'Java blob' code. This will load NCs with the Java operating system and applications.
