The Metropolitan Police is to outsource almost half its IT operations to the private sector.

Some 600 of the force's 1,000 IT staff will see their futures determined by competitive tendering. Repair, maintenance and installation work will be up for grabs in what is likely to be a fiercely competitive tendering process.

The move follows a four-month review aimed at reducing costs and bureaucracy.

The force's IT budget is currently #76 million.

A spokeswoman for the Met said the process would take up to three years.
