Deal enables easier app deployment

Softricity, a specialist in desktop application virtualisation, has signed a deal with Microsoft so Softricity’s server-based toolset can be integrated into Microsoft’s SMS software distribution system.

Softricity’s tools are designed to let IT staff more tightly control the deployment of applications to desktops and terminal servers such as Citrix Presentation Server.

Instead of installing applications directly onto computers via traditional setup tools, the Softricity approach involves running an agent on each desktop, and deploying applications to users rather than devices by hooking into Microsoft Active Directory. Thus, applications follow users to any device to which they log in.

The Softricity agent installs the application into its own localised environment, leaving alone the computer’s registry, DDL cache and other areas that are normally updated during software installation.

David Greschler, Softricity’s co-founder and vice-president, said this means the desktop operating system is likely to remain more secure and robust. “We believe applications should run anytime, anywhere, and without leaving any footprint on the device,” he added. “One of our clients said our tools make replacing a desktop as easy as changing a light bulb.”

Most customers buy SoftGrid to reduce management costs, and the savings can be up to 80 percent, according to Greschler. The alliance with Microsoft should also cut training and support costs for companies using Softricity’s SoftGrid Virtual Application Server.
