Public complaints over a misleading Microsoft advertisement claiming that the Windows operating system is ten times cheaper than Linux have been upheld by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
Objections were raised over the advert, which was headed: 'Weighing the cost of Linux vs Windows? Let's review the facts', and accompanied by a claim that Linux was found to be ten times more expensive than Windows Server 2003.
The ASA concluded today that the advert was misleading and has advised the software firm to amend it.
The comparative tests, which were supposed to have been adjudicated by analyst firm Meta Group, pitched a Linux server running on two z900 mainframe processors against a Windows 2003 server running on two 900Mhz Intel Xeon processors.
