Hewlett-Packard has released a handheld PC, which it hopes will woo users who want the functionality of a laptop but the portability of a pocket computer, writes Jan Howells.

The Jornada 820 looks very much like a laptop, but is smaller and weighs in at only 2.5 pounds. It is one of the first devices to have a full-sized keyboard housed in such a small format.

The Jornada 820 runs Windows CE, several Microsoft Office-like applications, and has a battery life of 10 hours. Hewlett-Packard puts its long battery life down to its choice of processor ? a low-power, Strongarm chip from Intel.

To save on weight, the Jornada comes minus a hard disk drive. Instead, all data is saved on its Ram memory. Users can deploy Compact Flash memory as a more permanent form of removable data storage.

The device?s display is 8.2in and offers a resolution of 640x480 pixels. It also comes with a 56Kbps modem and a cable for automatic synchronisation to a host PC.

The Jornada 820 is due to make its debut in the UK next year, when it will retail for around #849.
